Eric Steger, senior member of the 2010-11 Ball State golf team earned another accolade to the end of his Ball State career.
He picked up his first collegiate win at the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational back in April. He won the E-Z-GO Indianapolis Open in mid-May with an under par score of -7. Plus, he was named to the All-Mid-American Conference First Team.
On Monday, Steger added another accolade to his senior campaign: the PING Division I All-Midwest Region Team.
Steger was one of 152 players from across six regions to receive the honor.
Steger said out of all the honors he has received this year, this is one of the biggest.
"Getting named All-Region and one of the best players in the Midwest in the country is probably one of the biggest honors I've got," Steger said. "It is pretty neat to be up there and be named one of the better players in the Midwest region."
Coach Mike Fleck said Steger's success this season shows what recruits can do with a full career.
"First, It sets the standard for what guys can accomplish here in terms of coming in, being commended, working hard and getting opportunities," Fleck said. "The second part is the opportunity aspect. Eric was fortunate enough to be able to come in and have a four-year career of tournament play, experience and getting better. That's one of the big selling points I try to look at in terms of communicating with recruits."
As for Steger's golf career, he will continue to compete in amateur tournaments over the summer and keep getting better.
"I am going to stay an amateur throughout the summer," Steger said. "I'm going to play in some Indiana stuff and some national amateur tournaments, like the one in Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina, and just keep getting better and practicing."
Steger said in the fall, he will be doing the PGA Qualifying School.
"Hopefully I play well enough in that," he said. "If not this year, the next year."
