BASEBALL: Ball State looks to improve hitting, pitching for next season

Team heads to offseason with confidence after series win to end season

After 50 games spanning over four months, Ball State's baseball season is over.

With its 11-6 win over Toledo Saturday, Ball State not only clinched a series win, but much needed confidence and momentum going into next season.

Coach Alex Marconi said winning the series will help the players returning to play summer ball.

"It's important they were successful so when they get back out there again in another week or two, they have that fresh in their memory to build on," Marconi said.

Ball State has a lot of things it can work on during the offseason. The most important thing it needs to build on is its pitching staff. For the season, Ball State pitchers had a combined ERA of 5.92 and teams hit .298 against them.

Marconi said what's important for Ball State's pitching staff going into next season is building off of its successes.

"Everybody on our staff has had successes and failures," Marconi said. "The young guys need to understand that they need to build upon those successes and understand why they were successful in that specific outing and build on it."

In addition, Ball State will need to continue improving its hitting. In its last three games, Ball State hit .313 as a team in comparison to hitting .235 in its first three games of the season.

Marconi said what's been key for Ball State hitters in the past few games is they are starting to figure out what they need to do to have success.

"The way we swung the bats the last three or four weekends was awesome," Marconi said. "Part of that is our young guys are starting to figure it out."

"If they can continue to do that over the summer, then we're going to be where we think we should be next year," he said.

Ball State finishes its 2010-2011 season with a 15-35 overall record and an 11-15 record in Mid-American Conference play.
