Students go barefoot to help fight poverty

People around the nation are taking their shoes off and exposing their feet help end poverty.

Ball State students have pledged to not wear shoes in recognition of children in third world countries who never owned a pair of shoes. The event, One Day Without Shoes, is sponsored by TOMS, a company that gives one pair of shoes to needy children in need for every pair of shoes sold.

Chandler Bateman, a freshman public relations major, is someone who believes strongly in their cause. She owns multiple pairs of TOMS shoes. She decided to take part in One Day Without Shoes because she thinks it is important to help others.

"It's a cool idea and it's exactly what they represent," she said.

According to the One Day Without Shoes website, children must walk miles to school and farm mountainous terrain without ever owning a pair of shoes. In Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, TOMS' partners give children shoes to protect them from streets littered with glass, metal, and sewage. Without shoes, children are more at risk for injury and infection, and once they become sick, they cannot afford treatment.

On the website, www.onedaywithoutshoes.com, a graph shows how many people across the country have pledged to not wear shoes. It is organized by group, and IUPUI is the top organization, with 2,826 people pledging. YMCA and AOL were the second and third organizations on the list.

Student Voluntary Services are hosting a week of action against poverty. Tonight, they will be hosting a barefoot walk starting from the Bell Tower. For every walker, a dollar will be donated by the Take The Walk campaign. The event is co-sponsored by TOMS and similar walks are taking place across the country. Registration is at 4:30 p.m. at University Green and the walk is scheduled to take place at 5 p.m. today.
