Consistency has been a problem for Ball State all season long.
On Friday, Ball State overcame its inconsistencies.
Defeating Ohio by a combined score of 19-9, Ball State opened Mid-American Conference play with high-powered offense and an overall record of 2-0.
In the first game of the doubleheader, Ball State and Ohio played to a 3-3 tie after seven innings. A four-run inning in the top of the eighth gave Ball State a 7-3 lead in extra innings. Ohio scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to make the score 7-6, but sophomore right-hander and starting pitcher Audra Sanders closed the door on the Ohio rally, striking out sophomore infielder Caitlin Colvin to end the game.
In the second game, Ball State continued to get offensive, scoring 12 runs on 15 hits.
Freshman first baseman Taylor Rager continued her hot streak at the plate. Rager hit a grand slam in the top of the first and a two-run single in the top of the second to give her a total of six RBIs for the game.
Junior right-handed pitcher Kim Mazzapica pitched all five innings for Ball State, giving up four hits and three runs.
