SOFTBALL: Ball State confident heading into Wright State game

Cardinals hope to carry weekend momentum against Raiders

After two close wins against Miami, Ball State starts the week full of confidence and momentum.

With the late-inning victories against its Mid-American Conference opponent, Ball State looks to continue its momentum at home today against Wright State.

Freshman designated hitter Jennifer Gilbert said the wins over the weekend brought huge amounts of positive energy into the clubhouse.

"I know that all of us are excited about our wins," Gilbert said. "You could just feel the positive energy around us when we won the last game. Miami is a good team, and we were excited to get both wins. Right now, we're just going to keep playing our game."

Gilbert hit a grand slam in the seventh inning Saturday to give the Cardinals a 5-3 lead, which was the final score of the game.

Gilbert said hitting the grand slam was an unbelievable feeling.

"Words couldn't really describe how excited I was," she said. "I knew it was a tough situation to go in, with bases loaded, two outs and in the last inning to score. When I hit the ball, I watched it as I was rounding first, and when I saw it go out, I started jumping up and down while running past second.

"It was an amazing feeling."

Despite its late-inning heroics, senior right fielder Alyssa Collins said this week Ball State is focused on another set of games.

"We go right back to work," Collins said. "We played awesome games this weekend, but now they are in the past. It's time to prepare for another week and five more games."
