As the thunder rumbles and heavy rains pour, university officials say there's not much they can do to avoid possible flooding.
"I guess we could sandbag the entranceways, but we have to keep entrances open," said Kevin Kenyon, associate vice president of Facilitites Planning and Management at Ball State.
Central and Southern Indiana were hit with flash floods of up to three inches of water this morning. Now Muncie faces a possible half inch to three quarters of an inch this afternoon.
A flash flood watch is in effect through Wednesday morning, according to the National Weather Service. The showers and thunderstorms will continue until about 2 p.m.
Tonight's forecast calls for damaging winds and heavy rains.
The weather service reports that widespread river flooding will develop by Thursday, and significant flooding will occur along rivers south of Interstate 70 as well as White River in Muncie.
A cold front will push across the state tonight with thunderstorms and straight line winds. Isolated tornados should not be ruled out, according to the weather service.
"It's just getting here now," Kenyon said. "It looks like it will be substantial."
