Ball State began its quest for a Mid-American Conference championship on a good note Friday with a 7-0 win over Northern Illinois.
Even though the score said the Cardinals swept the Huskies, the match was much closer.
"One through four singles were close," coach Bill Richards said. "We were fortunate to win all four of those."
Ball State took a 3-0 lead winning the doubles point and No. 5 and 6 singles. The top four singles points were hard-fought victories, as they all had tiebreakers or went three sets.
Austin Sansone at No. 5 and Andres Monroy at No. 6 were the only two singles matches to end in straight sets.
Ball State moves to 1-0 in MAC action while Northern Illinois is virtually eliminated from the regular-season title with a 1-2 record.
Four MAC matches remain for Ball State, with the next coming at Toledo on Sunday.
"It's going to be a tough match," Richards said. "They are a good team. They are playing extremely well. We've won 4-3 the last four times we've played them."
