MEN'S GOLF: Ball State completes play in Florida

Cardinals finish 10th out of 18 teams in Rio Pinar Invitiational

The Ball State men's golf team made a minor improvement from Monday's first two rounds at the Rio Pinar Invitational in Orlando, Fla. by finishing 10th out of 18 teams.

The Cardinals managed to stroke an 891 while Central Florida finished with an 841, winning the invitational.

"Our first round really dinged us to begin with," coach Mike Fleck said. "We definitely could have done better."

Fleck said his team struggled in the invitational.

"We didn't putt very well in the different type of grass that is down here in Florida," he said. "We also had too many mental mistakes."

Ball State senior Eric Steger led the team with an individual finish in 10th place shooting an overall 214 for the entire tournament.

"I think my performance was average," Steger said. "I made some uncharacteristic mistakes that are very rare. I had some trouble with my putting this weekend.

"Not being able to play outside all year really takes a toll on your short game."

Freshman Tyler Merkel finished with a 244 and tied for 44th place individually.

Junior TJ Carpenter tied for 60th with a score of 227.

Sophomore Joe Gasser tied for 68th with a score of 228 and sophomore Tony Lazzara tied for 88th with a total of 235.

The Cardinals will have the weekend off to prepare for the Mizzou Intercollegiate on April 4 at The Club at Old Hawthorne.
