Latino Student Union brings diversity through food

The Latino Student Union will conclude its El Mes celebration today with a potluck dinner in the Student Center Yuhas Room.

Román, LSU president Graciela, said her favorite part about the event, titled Sabor Latino, is exposing people to the food of her culture.

"It's at chance for everyone to come and have food that is authentic, not just Taco Bell," she said.

Food from Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, Mexico and other Latin American countries will be featured at the event.

Román said she is making flautas and horchata water for the event. Flautas are a rolled up tortilla filled with chicken, cheese or beef.

Horchata is a drink made with milk, rice and cinnamon, Román said.

"Food is a big thing in our culture, as well as family, we're really trying to make this a family dinner," Michael Rivera, LSU vice president, said.

Rivera said Sabor Latino, which means flavor of Latino, will be an experience most people haven't had before.

"It's going to be home-cooked food the way their families have made it all their life," he said.

Eduardo Beltran, a biomechanics graduate student, grew up in Miami and said it will be nice to have a mix of food again.

"Being from Miami, I was fortunate to have Colombian, Mexican [and] Cuban foods," he said. "This will give us a chance to try a good variety of food from different areas."

Beltran will bring a flank steak with a special dipping sauce. He said the biggest problem he's heard about is finding ingredients.

"There are a lot of spices that are regional, so some people have had trouble finding those," he said.

Beltran, Román and Rivera all have the same goal: to bring people to a new experience.

"With any group, the classic thing is to get people interested through their stomachs," Beltran said. "Hopefully more people will come out and enjoy it."
