GYMNASTICS: Cardinals sending two to regionals

Emmons, Allen will represent Ball State at NCAA Regionals

The Ball State gymnastics team will send multiple gymnasts to compete in the all-around at the NCAA Regionals.

Junior Brittney Emmons and sophomore Nicole Allen will represent the Cardinals at the Tuscaloosa, Ala., site on April 2. They were the No. 1 and No. 2 all-around qualifiers out of the Central Region.

It is only the second time in school history that two Cardinal gymnasts will be in the all-around at regionals.

This will be Emmons' third trip to the postseason and second straight in the all-around. Emmons finished 17th in the all-around last season after a pair of mistakes on the uneven bars and balance beam.

Allen has qualified for regionals for the first time.

As a team, Ball State finished the season ranked No. 48 in the country — 1.245 points out of a regionals berth.

Two Ball State freshmen just missed being alternates for the regional competition. Leah Wilson was 0.01 points behind Western Michigan's Caroline O'Brien on the beam, and Aftyn Siemer was 0.015 behind the Broncos' Lauren Bledsoe.

Around the Mid-American Conference, Kent State and Central Michigan advanced their teams to regionals. Western Michigan finished 37th, 0.04 points behind Michigan State for the 36th, and final, team spot.

Instead, the Broncos will send three gymnasts and three alternates to Tuscaloosa. Bowling Green had two gymnasts qualify, while Eastern Michigan and Northern Illinois each had one make it to regionals.
