GOP leader sees 'step forward' in Indiana boycott

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana's House speaker says he's more optimistic about the return of boycotting Democrats legislators, although he doesn't have any commitment that they're coming back.

Republican Speaker Brian Bosma told reporters Wednesday that Democratic leader Patrick Bauer called him earlier in the day. He says they discussed parliamentary matters regarding several bills that have been stalled during the boycott.

Most Democratic lawmakers weren't present when Bosma tried to convene the House on Wednesday, leaving it with too few members to do business. Most Democrats have been at an Urbana, Ill., hotel for 16 days in protest of GOP-backed education and labor bills they oppose.

Bosma said the contact with Bauer was a "step forward" and that he's glad the Democratic leader asked specific questions.
