The chairperson of University Senate abstained Thursday from voting to add more professional personnel to the Senate group that helps advise Ball State on budgetary items.
Members of the Salary and Benefits Committee, an arm of Faculty Council, said they didn't see any issue with having mostly faculty members on the committee. But chairperson Eric Kelly and others didn't see it that way.
Terry Zivney, chairperson of the committee, suggested a roll call vote to table the issue, even though it's been debated among senate councils since last spring.
"It's important to look at how committee chairs are elected," he said. "My experience is that the professional personnel almost always show up.
"Think about it in the summer. Vote on it in the fall. It won't be
done any sooner if we vote on it now."
The Faculty Council opted 20-17 not to table the vote.
After amending the proposal, the latest version shows that seven members of the group will be from Faculty Council and six will be professional personnel, representing each of the six vice-presidential areas.
Each group — faculty and professional personnel — will serve on subcommittees that will address issues that are relevant only to that particular group. Non-voting members may attend all subcommittee meetings. This group includes representatives from the Provost Office, Business Affairs Department and the Financial and Budgetary Affairs Committee.
Passing the proposal to the University Senate was Dustin Supa's last accomplishment as Faculty Council chairperson. The professor of journalism will be teaching next fall at Boston University.
"This was not our busiest year, but we got a lot done," he said. "There were a lot of challenges as always, but in the Senate, we were able to work effectively."
