Be Here Now to host beer pong tournament Saturday

Fans of March Madness might want to make room on their calendars for another tournament this month. Muncie Pong will host the Indiana Beer Pong State Championships on Saturday.

Contenders will compete at Be Here Now. Registration begins at noon and anyone 18 and older is eligible to participate. The event will include a singles and a doubles tournament, each of which is double elimination.

The winning team will receive $1,000 cash.

Muncie Pong will follow the official rules of the World Series of Beer Pong. Entry fees for the event vary, but top performers from each tournament can expect cash prizes.

Dustin Rose, founder of Muncie Pong, said he established the group to promote organized beer pong tournaments in the Muncie area.

In order to meet the demands of the increasingly popular sport, Rose sponsors state-wide events similar to this weekend's State Championship. He said he expects about 40 teams.

Muncie Pong also hosts weekly beer pong tournaments on Wednesday nights at Bypass Bar and Grill.

Rose said he wants to see Indiana take beer pong to the next level.

"Our ultimate goal is to get as many teams from Indiana out to the World Series of Beer Pong [in Las Vegas]," he said.

The World Series of Beer Pong is annually in Las Vegas. Teams from all over the world show up to compete. Last year more than 800 teams made the trip hoping to win the grand prize of $50,000.

There aren't any nationally ranked beer pong teams from Muncie, but Bloomington has two teams ranked within the top five.
