Students logging into the Ball State wireless network will see a pop-up telling them the way they use the Internet will change.
The BSUSecure wireless network is an option for students connecting to the Internet and will soon replace the BSU wireless network. Starting May 11, all students will have to use the BSUSecure network or BSUGuest.
Alex Chalmers, lead enterprise systems and security architect at Ball State, said the BSUSecure network is designed to give students a safer way to access the Internet on campus through the use of an automated encryption connection.
"When you're connected to BSU, there is not an encryption," he said. "Somebody who may be listening in close can't see what your traffic is or what you're surfing on [with the secure network]."
As of now, the network prompts the student to log in on a web browser before accessing the Internet, but with the secure network, students should not have to log in every time. The secure network asks students to log in before connecting to the Internet only once, rather than at the beginning of each session.
Students using BSUSecure can also access Ball State resources, such as iLocker, safely since encryption will prevent other people from seeing their actions online.
The alternative wireless connection available on campus is called BSUGuest. Anyone can access the network, but it is ultimately for guest use.
Todd Meister, senior IT architect, said Ball State plans to treat the guest wireless connection just like other public areas with free wireless Internet.
"Guests in the future will have to go through a page to accept terms and agreements," he said. "There will be a limited connection of two or three hours."
The Ball State community will continue to see the pop-up when logging into the Ball State network until they switch to BSUSecure.
Meister said the secure network pop-ups warning students about the switch are a way to keep communication open between students and Computing Services.
"We want to avoid any surprises," he said. "Overall, this is a better approach."
