Despite coach Christine Bader's high hopes for her team, Ball State women's tennis lost its season opener 4-3 to Wright State Thursday.
Bader was hoping to return from Dayton, Ohio with her first win of the spring season for the Cardinals, but were not able to get the win.
After being swept 7-0 last season by the Cardinals, the Raiders came out strong from the beginning to get the win.
Ball State head coach was unavailable for comment after the match.
Ball State senior Hayley Hall was one of two Cardinals to tally a win in singles play. She defeated Ami Nini in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-1.
Sophomore Paola Rodriguez earned the other singles victory for Ball State, winning a close match 6-4 and 7-5 against her opponent Chelsea Girgash.
Ball State suffered four losses in singles play, which they could not recover from.
In doubles play, the Cardinals swept the Raiders 3-0.
Teammates freshman Kristel Sanders and junior Kylee Johnson defeated their opponents 8-6.
Juniors Dena Boulieris and Sarah Hebble also defeated their opponents 8-6 and Rodriguez and Hall swept their opponents 8-0.
Ball State's next match will be Sunday when it travels to Bloomington to play against Indiana to search for their first victory.
