A Ball State English professor will read from her book "Comeback Season: The Heartwarming Story of How a Good Sports Metaphor Can Change Your Life" Friday morning.
Cathy Day will read from her memoir as well as discuss the different ways sports have informed her writing, teaching and life despite being a bad athlete.
"Comeback Season" is described as "part memoir about life as a single woman and part sports story about the Indianapolis Colts Super Bowl season." It's Day's second book and follows her on her journey to find love in the span of a professional football season.
"The book was a risk for me – a different genre, different subject matter. A lot of people told me not to take that risk, but for some reason, I just absolutely needed to write it. I think doing so made me a better writer, and a better teacher, too," Day said. "I used to discourage my students from writing in particular ways, but now, I just try to help them write whatever it is they feel impelled to write."
Day's first book, "The Circus in Winter" was performed as a musical by Ball State students at Sursa Hall last spring.
"I'm really honored that so many people at Ball State support me and my work," Day said. "What a wonderful place to live and teach and write."
Day will speak at the E.B. & Bertha C. Ball Center on Friday at 10 a.m. The event is free, but reservations are required and can be made by calling 285-8975.
