INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Synthetic marijuana would be outlawed in Indiana under a bill that a Senate panel has approved.
The Senate Corrections Committee voted unanimously Tuesday to outlaw synthetic marijuana often known as Spice or K2. Under the proposal, possessing or dealing synthetic marijuana would be treated the same as possessing or dealing real marijuana.
Health officials and police are urging lawmakers to ban the substance, which has been blamed for adverse reactions such as increased heart rate, confusion and hallucinations. Opponents say Spice is a serious social concern but said criminalizing it wouldn't solve the problem.
Several local ordinances already ban the sale of the substance in stores. The products are illegal in several states.
