WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Aggressive attitude carries Ball State to victory

Cardinals win back-to-back road games for first time in more than a year

For the first time since March 2009, the Ball State women's basketball team has won consecutive games on the road.

Ball State (4-3) picked up its second road win of the season with a 66-60 victory against Southern Illinois Edwardsville. Ball State beat Valparaiso on the road on Nov. 24.

"We were really aggressive and assertive on offense today," coach Kelly Packard said. "We did not want to come out tentative and we stressed ‘have an aggressive and assertive mentality.' We responded great. We shot a lot better."

The Cardinals took the first lead of the game after a basket from freshman forward Jazmin Hitchens. It was the first time this season the Cardinals scored the first basket of the game.

The Cougars took control of the opening minutes of the game by holding a 15-9 lead over the Cardinals. Ball State rallied to take a 32-28 lead into the locker room.

Ball State dominated the second half, leading for more than 18 minutes after intermission.

Late in the second half, the Cardinals made 11-of-12 foul shots to push their lead to 10 and never looked back. Ball State shot 32 free throws in the game, 16 more than SIUE.

Senior forward Emily Maggert rebounded from her poor game against Missouri on Wednesday with 21 points and 16 rebounds. She was the only Cardinal to score in double figures.

Packard said when Maggert plays well, the senior helps the team stay poised.

"Earlier, against other teams, she was dribbling right into double teams," Packard said. "Now she has been pivoting with the ball high. Her experience allowed her to bounce back."

Junior forward Suzanne Grossnickle finished with nine points and five rebounds. Senior guard Ty'Ronda Benning finished with eight points and a game-high five assists.

The Cardinals shot 40 percent from the field and 42.9 percent from 3-point range.
