SWIMMING AND DIVING: Ball State looks to repeat success at meet

The Ball State men's and women's swimming and diving teams both enter this weekend's House of Champions Invitational having dominated the event in recent years.

The men's team came in second last year at the IUPUI-hosted meet, but won the event in 2006, 2007 and 2008.

"We've always done well in this event and we're swimming well up to this point," coach Bob Thomas said, indicating his intentions of winning the meet once again.

The women's team has won the event every year since the Cardinals were first invited to participate in 2003.

"Our goal is always to win, and this invitational will provide good competition," coach Laura Seibold-Caudill said.

Xavier, Western Illinois, Center College, IUPUI and Indianapolis are the other teams entered in the meet.

With both teams approaching the bulk of their schedule, they will continue to practice at a high volume for several more weeks in order to improve as much as possible before practice time becomes more of an exercise in maintenance.

"We're doing a lot of loading right now with the volume and intensity," Thomas said. "We're focusing on the end of the season and just taking the meets as they come.

"I like to think of it as climbing a mountain and we're approaching the peak right now…we'll continue the intensity until Christmas, then see where we are."

Seibold-Caudill added that the women's team is "swimming with a lot of intensity and doing a lot of power work."

With women still holding on to a perfect 4-0 record, Seibold-Caudill said that their perfection is something the whole team is conscious of.

"Even though invitationals don't count towards our dual meet win/loss record, we still want to win them," Seibold-Caudill said. "We want to win both the House of Champions and the Coers Invitational next week."

The Cardinals will hit the pool at 6 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. on Saturday for the two-day event.
