The Doug Coers Invitational was temporarily paused Friday after Ball State freshman diver Jake Brehmer collided with the 3-meter diving board in the midst of his routine.
Brehmer was pulled from the pool by one of his teammates and two lifeguards before he was placed on a backboard and wheeled out of Lewellen Pool on a stretcher.
He was taken to Ball Memorial Hospital and his condition was unknown Friday night.
Both men's and women's swim teams are in contention after the first six events of the meet.
The men are in second, trailing Grand Valley State 215-202. Valparaiso is in third with 78 points.
The Cardinals picked up wins in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:26.95) of sophomore Michael Weber, junior Tony DeBrota, junior Chris Krupa and junior Casey Schroeder, while Krupa won the 200 IM (1:56.29), sophomore Casey Schroeder took the 50 freestyle (21.77) and senior Jeremy Whited won the 3-meter diving competition.
The Ball State women lead second-place Marshall 233-149.5, while Grand Valley State (130.5), Valparaiso (47), and Findlay (40) finish out the standings.
The women began the meet with a win in the 200 freestyle relay (1:38.61), led by sophomore Jennifer Miles, freshman Betsy Bowen, sophomore Mallory Pryzblinski and senior Katie Bylsma. Freshman Emily Wisolek took the 500 freestyle with a time of 5.09:35, freshman Haley Richter won the 200 individual medley with a 2.10:26 effort, Bylsma won the 50 freestyle in 24.69 and the 400 medley relay of freshman Mallory Miles, freshman Bridgette Ruehl, Richter and Bylsma won with a time of 3:57.44.
The meet resumes Saturday with sessions at 9 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
