FOOTBALL: Northern Illinois extends lead at Ball State

Wenning injured in second quarter

Ball State got on the scoreboard, but couldn't prevent Northern Illinois from pulling away in the second quarter.

The Huskies lead the Cardinals 35-7 at halftime. Ball State's lone touchdown came on a two-yard run by Eric Williams. The Cardinals were able to capitalize on a fumble by quarterback Chandler Harnish, which linebacker Travis Freeman recovered at the seven-yard line. The fumble was forced by defensive end Robert Eddins.

Quarterback Keith Wenning was injured on the series, scrambling on third down. He was hit very hard at about the four yard line, which drew a penalty. He was replaced by backup Kelly Page and has not returned to the game.

But after Ball State narrowed the gap, Harnish and the Huskies went back to work. He connected with wide receiver Nathan Palmer for a 47-yard touchdown, the pair's second of the day. Running back Chad Spann ran for a pair of touchdowns in the quarter, one from two yards, one from seven.

Harnish completed his first seven passes of the game and finished the half 11-of-15 for 157 yards. He also has run for 30 yards.
