AMHERST, N.Y. – Safety Sean Baker led Ball State with two interceptions and a fumble return for a touchdown and the visitors beat Buffalo 20-3 Friday night.
Baker's first interception of the game broke the Ball State record for career interceptions, passing Shafer Suggs and Mike Lecklider. When the junior made his second pick of the game early in the fourth quarter, the Bulls had just three receptions for 19 yards.
Baker was just part of the reason Buffalo could get nothing going on offense after kicking a field goal in the first quarter. Cornerback Jason Pinkston also had an interception and starting quarterback Alex Zordich was injured in the first quarter and did not return. Despite his absence, Zordich remained the Bulls' leading rusher with 30 yards on four carries.
Ball State meanwhile, was able to move the ball effectively against Buffalo. Running back Eric Williams had been hampered by injuries the past few weeks, but appeared to be fully healthy Friday. Williams ran 24 times for 109 yards, his first 100-yard game since Opening Night.
Williams did not score a touchdown, however. Keith Wenning threw a 32-yard strike to wide receiver Otis Brown on the first play of the second quarter to give the Cardinals a 7-3 lead they would never relinquish.
Ball State's other touchdown came on the first play of the third quarter, when Baker returned a fumble by backup quarterback Jerry Davis 26 yards.
Ian McGarvey added two field goals, one from 40 yards, the other from 32.
