SGA to hold forum about midterm election

Less than one week from Election Day, the Student Government Association is holding a forum highlighting issues significant to college students and the differences between Republicans and Democrats.

SGA is hosting "Where Do You Stand" at 7 p.m. at the L.A. Pittinger Student Center Ballroom with Mitch Isaacs, assistant director of Student Life, as the moderator.

SGA member Whittley Lewis said the goal of the forum is to start a conversation among students and answer their questions about the midterm election.

"We want to give you an idea of what the two parties think so you can formulate your own opinion," she said. "You can see how you feel about the issues that affect us all."

The major issues discussed at the forum will be health care, smoking bans, immigration, taxation, the environment and the size of government. The issues will be presented side-by-side highlighting the similarities and differences between the two major parties.

Once the major issues of the election are discussed, there will be time for a question-and-answer session.

Political science professor John Rouse will be at the forum to answer questions and speak with students.

SGA worked with university administration, the political science department and the Office of Student Life to ensure they were presenting the information in the best and most fair way possible.

SGA member Kayla Pickersgill said the forum hopes to educate students to make well-informed decisions when they go to vote Tuesday.

"This event is not to promote one side or the other. It is so students can know what they believe and can make an informed decision," she said. "We need to try to be the best, well-informed and well-rounded American citizens or resident in Muncie. We are the future of the country, and we need to make a difference."
