FOOTBALL: Ball State takes early lead against Eastern Michigan

Eagles miss two field goals

Dodging two early mistakes that gave Eastern Michigan great field position, Ball State capitalized on a mistake by its opponent to take a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.

Keith Wenning threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Dan Ifft, who was wide open just in front of the end zone. The pass came just two plays after a muffed punt by the Eagles was recovered on the 20-yard line by cornerback Koreen Burch.

The Cardinals had plenty of miscues of their own to start the game. Wenning was almost intercepted twice and fumbled a snap. Running back Eric Williams muffed a kick off, but the ball rolled into the end zone for a touchback and Scott Kovanda's first punt of the day was partially blocked.

But Eastern Michigan was unable to take advantage of any of the mistakes, missing field goals from 33 and 40 yards.
