KENT, Ohio – Ball State overcame two big plays for Kent State to start the game, and leads the hosts 7-6 after the first quarter.
The Golden Flashes gained 62 yards on the first two plays of the game, but the drive stalled and they settled for a 39-yard field goal.
Ball State responded with a nine-play, 60-yard drive later in the quarter to take the lead when Keith Wenning scored on a quarterback sneak.
Kent State would later add a 43-yard field goal to cut Ball State's lead to one point before the second quarter.
