MOUNT PLESANT, Mich. – For the first time since Opening Night, Ball State got on the scoreboard first with a 56-yard touchdown pass from Keith Wenning to running back Eric Williams with 5:30 left in the first quarter.
Ball State leads Central Michigan 7-3 after the opening quarter.
After the Cardinals' scoring drive, the Chippewas responded with a long drive, getting within seven yards of the end zone. But Ball State's defense held strong, forcing Central Michigan to kick a 25-yard field goal.
Ball State's touchdown pass was the longest completion of Wenning's short career and Williams' first receiving touchdown.
Williams was never covered by the Chippewas coming out of the backfield and ran into the end zone untouched.
Wenning completed what might have been the best quarter of his season a perfect 6-of-6 for 68 yards.
Running back Cory Sykes made his return to the lineup quickly felt with a 29-yard run on his first touch of the game. Sykes had missed the last two games with knee tendonitis.
