A seminar is being held Friday for the Ball State community to learn more about gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people coming out in the workplace.
The seminar, with is open to anyone regardless of sexual orientation, will raise awareness about workplace issues for the GLBT community.
"Out at Work" will be from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center Cardinal Hall. It is sponsored by the Office of Institutional Diversity and the Counseling Center.
Jay Zimmerman, Counseling Center psychologist, said the seminar tries to cover a wide range of topics.
"The primary goal is to provide information to the GLBT community and the straight community," Zimmerman said. "Another is to help people go through the decision-making process. It is also to inform those who are interested in becoming GLBT allies and advocates."
Wendra Foster, a 1991 Ball State alumna, will be leading the seminar. She began working at Eli Lilly in 2000. Since, Foster has become a co-chairwoman of Gay and Lesbian Employees, Advocates and More, a Lilly-affinity group.
A panel will also be available to open conversation with Associate Vice President of Student Affairs Alan Hargrave, Coordinator of Ph.D. Student Services at Indiana University Marla Zimmerman and Assistant Director of the Career Center Joseph Goodwin.
Goodwin said the speakers will bring something different to the panel.
"We'll each have 10 minutes to talk about our own opinions," he said. "I have been out for 35 years, and I am sure that is probably much longer than anyone there."
Lunch will be provided for those who registered before Sunday, and Zimmerman about 100 people are currently registered.
Zimmerman said "Out at Work" will be beneficial for GLBT and straight attendees because the workplace concerns everyone.
"We work with them everyday," she said. "Some are out, some are not. It is important to know how to respond to them."
