Sunday's game looked like déjà vu for the Ball State soccer team.
For the second time this season, the Cardinals dropped two matches in a row after a three-game winning streak.
Their 1-0 loss in overtime to Northern Illinois put Ball State's record at 0-2 in Mid-American Conference play, following a 3-0 loss to Western Michigan on Friday.
After playing an even contest during regulation time, Northern Illinois midfielder Kylie Revelle headed a corner kick into the net in the 95th minute to end the game.
Sophomore forward Paige Stroinski led the Cardinals with six shots, but for the second consecutive match, the team failed to net a goal.
"We are stringing passes together and making good runs. We just can't put our chances away right now," sophomore defender Brigit Reder said. "We're going to be fine. If we just stay with our game then [goals] will come."
Five of Ball State's next nine games are at home. The team will count on this stretch to make up ground in the MAC.
"Our last two games didn't show how well we can perform," Reder said. "We need to take advantage of our home field, fans and territory to lock in wins late in the season."
Only eight teams make the MAC Tournament, so Ball State's 0-2 start puts them in a big hole.
"There is still a shot we can make it into the tournament," coach Craig Roberts said. "And we believe we can make it."
