WEST LAYFAYETTE – Though Ball State was able to control Purdue's offense better in the second quarter, it was not able to close the two-touchdown gap and enters halftime down 14-0.
The Cardinals were able to keep the Boilermakers off the scoreboard, but were unable to score any points of their own.
Ball State missed its multiple opportunities to score in the second quarter. Its best chance came on a first-and-10 from the Purdue 10-yard line. Quarterback Keith Wenning threw his first career interception into the back of the end zone.
The Cardinals missed another scoring chance in the red zone after getting a first down at the Boilermakers' 14-yard line. A bad snap from the wildcat went past MiQuale Lewis, who had to fall on the ball for a 16-yard loss. The drive ended when Ian McGarvey missed a 44-yard field goal.
McGarvey also missed a 48-yard field goal in the half. That kick would have tied his career-long.
Kelly Page made a few brief appearances as quarterback for Ball State. He threw one pass, completing it to Lewis for 11 yards. He also ran the ball three times for 20 yards.
Eric Williams leads the Cardinals in rushing with 53 yards. Wenning completed 11-of-17 passes for 89 yards in his first career start.
