Support for Muncie Action Plan continues

Muncie Action Plan Co-Chairman George Branam is working this week to move MAP into its second phase, which includes mobilizing multiple task forces to begin drumming up support for the project from local agencies and Muncie residents.

"MAP has finished its first phase, which was to gather input from the public, organize that input and then confirm that final plan with the public," Branam said. "I'm really happy with where we are."

Planning for the MAP began about a year ago and has involved more than 2,000 Muncie officials and citizens and collected thousands of ideas for ways of improving the Muncie community, according to the official MAP that was released to the public after planning was completed.

Thursday's meeting, which begins Phase 2, comes after the plan was adopted by the Delaware County Council this week and the City Planning Commission earlier this month.

Branam said the meeting involves reconstituting the MAP board and recollecting the support and manpower needed to start making some of the plan's largest goals become realities.

"We need people who are enthusiastic and capable of leading," Branam said. "Everybody wants the same things for Muncie; some just don't want it in the same ways as others."
The MAP voices a desire for the city to become more closely tied to Ball State. This is a desire Muncie City Council member Brad Polk said he has heard frequently at MAP meetings.

"I met with a group of 20 people, most of which agreed that we need to better foster our relationship with Ball State University," he said. "I'd like to see businesses get better at opening their doors for internships."

The MAP already marked its first item off the list earlier this month when Muncie City Council approved a $2 million bond to aid in the revitalization of Tuhey Park near the center of Muncie.

The next MAP meeting is Thursday at 6 p.m. in the Community Foundations Office Building in downtown Muncie.
