Ball State University defeated Northern Illinois University to advance to the quarterfinals of the Mid-American Conference Tournament.
Competing in a play-in match, Ball State defeated Northern Illinois on Thursday afternoon 4-2.
Thursday's match bore a striking resemblance to Ball State's 5-2 win over Northern Illinois during the regular season with a solid all-around effort from the team.
The Cardinals took control of the match early by taking a 2-1 win doubles play, an area the team has struggled with for most of the season.
Both of those two wins proved to be hard fought for the Cardinals. Kylee Johnson and Katherine Rist took the No. 1 match with a 8-5 victory, while Sarah Hebble and Lauren Pickrel battled to a 9-7 win, giving Ball State the point.
The singles play for Ball State also put on a strong performance, winning 3-2 over Northern Illinois. Hayley Hall and Rist both cruised to straight set wins in their matches, while Hebble once again played in a close match until finally emerging victorious with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 win.
Ball State's next obstacle will be a match today against the No. 1 ranked University of Miami.
Miami easily took care of Ball State earlier this month, winning the regular season match 6-1.
