If the Ball State University men's tennis team wants to emerge as Mid-American Conference champions, then a win today would be a big step.
The Cardinals go on the road to face off against Western Michigan University today at 1 p.m.
Reigning MAC champions the past three years, the Broncos have been the class of the conference and are the favorites again this year.
"[The Broncos] are the team to beat until someone knocks them off," coach Bill Richards said. "They lost to Buffalo last week, though, so I think it shows there are other teams in this league besides just Western and Ball State."
Both the University at Buffalo and Ball State won their first conference matches 4-3. Looking at the scores comparatively, Richards said he thinks his team has a good shot.
Ball State lost both its conference play match and tournament match against Western Michigan last year.
"We have always matched up close in years past," Richards said. "They have traditionally been tough matches and I expect it to be the same this year. We have just come up on the short end of the stick in last couple years."
Evidenced by Western's loss last week, anything can happen in these matches, but Richards is confident his team will go out there and give it their best shot.
