The Ball State University men's tennis team gave Mid-American Conference leaders University at Buffalo just about all it could handle Saturday, but the Cardinals' recent inability to win in doubles proved costly again against the Bulls.
The host Cardinals lost 4-3 at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center as the Bulls claimed the MAC regular season title with the victory.
The loss was Ball State's first conference loss of the season. The Cardinals fell to 14-8 overall and 2-1 in the MAC.
Eduardo Pavia continued his successful 2010 No. 1 singles campaign against Buffalo. The junior defeated the Bulls' Wojciech Starakiewicz 7-5, 6-1 to improve to 16-3 in singles and 3-0 in MAC play.
Junior Shaun Bussert also improved to 3-0 in MAC singles play against Buffalo, defeating Alex Kalinin 7-5, 6-4 at the No. 6 singles spot.
Buffalo (12-6, 5-0 MAC) got things rolling in its favor early by claiming the doubles point, winning at No. 1 and 2 doubles. Ball State won three of the six singles spots, but it wasn't enough.
The Cardinals close out the regular season on the road with two MAC matches in Illinois. Ball State takes on Chicago State University (0-9, 0-1 MAC) Friday before traveling to Northern Illinois University (9-10, 0-3 MAC) Saturday.
