Each week, The Ball State Daily News sports staff picks its PPQ — the player, play and quote of the week. And, with the help of our online readers, the weekly fan choice is also featured.
Here's this week's best:
Player: Kolbrin Vitek, baseball
Vitek was named a national player of the week by the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. The All-American junior threw seven shutout innings for the victory Sunday and went 6-for-12 at Ohio over the weekend.
Play: Jessie Ware, softball
Ware continued her tear through the non-conference portion of Ball State's schedule Tuesday in the Cardinals' 11-4 win at IUPUI. In the top of the sixth inning, she ripped the ball into the outfield and turned it into an inside-the-park home run, her second homer of the game and fourth of the season.
Quote: "College football is a game of competition. Shoot, I haven't won any games yet. I've got to go out there and earn everything I do." — Sophomore quarterback Kelly Page on the position competition in spring practice
Fan Choice: Anders Nelson, men's volleyball
In a landslide, Nelson's 43 votes and 67 percent of the vote earned him this week's Fan Choice award. The junior middle attacker had eight blocks in the Cardinals' sweep of No. 3 Cal State Northridge. Nelson held All-American middle attacker Jacek Ratajczak to a season-low .118 attack percentage in the Ball State victory.
