Senior Kailly Fisher has been dieting and training since October and has had two spray tans within the past 24 hours, all in her preparation for the Mr. and Miss Ball State Bodybuilding Competition.
Fisher decided to compete in the competition after hearing about how difficult it was. She said she wanted to push herself and has always enjoyed lifting and working out.
The diet has been the most difficult part of the process, she said. Competitors have to constantly be eating, but they must be eating the right foods. It can be difficult to accommodate the strict guidelines, she said.
The Mr. and Miss Ball State event consists of a male competition and female competition. The male competition is divided into two height divisions, short and tall. The short division is for men 5'9 and below, and the tall division is for men 5'10 and above. There is only one female division.
During the competition, each participant is required to do mandatory poses. In addition to that, each competitor is allotted 60 seconds with music of their choice for an individual routine.
Sophomore Ryan Nelson was a competitor in last year's bodybuilding competition as a freshman. Nelson began competing when he was 17 years old after his uncle got him involved with lifting and bodybuilding. He has also competed and placed in several other competitions throughout Indiana.
Nelson said last year's event was one of his favorite shows but preparing for it was a lot of hard work. He plans to watch this year's event from the audience.
"I needed to take a break for a while," he said.
Sophomore Mike Sloan was an athlete in high school and decided to compete in this year's competition so he could find something else to spend his time on. Sloan said the dieting and training for the event has been a challenge.
"It is hard to stay motivated when you are doing the same routine everyday, but in the end it is all worth it," he said.
Sloan said after the competition he doesn't anticipate cravings, but he will probably eat something terrible for him, he said.
As for Fisher, she plans on splurging at Puerta Vallarta Restaurant with family and friends immediately following the competition.
"I already bought all the food I am finally able to eat this coming weekend," she said.
