Four members of the Ball State University women's swimming and diving team on Friday learned their hard work out of the pool and in the classroom had paid off.
Emily Karwoski, Sarah Kehe, Maria Gramelspacher and Catherine Ingram were each named to the 2010 Academic All-Mid-American Conference team, as voted by the faculty athletic representatives at MAC schools.
Earning her first Academic All-MAC award is Karwoski, a senior who owns a 3.56 grade-point average as a speech pathology major. Karwoski also excelled in the pool for the Cardinals, being named MAC Swimmer of the Week once this past season and leading Ball State with 25 points and three school records in the MAC Championships.
Kehe, meanwhile, earns her fourth career Academic All-MAC award as she also participates in track and field and cross country for Ball State. Kehe, also a senior, has a 3.88 GPA as an exercise science major. She was named also named MAC Swimmer of the Week once this past season and placed 19th at the MAC Championships in the 500-freestyle.
Gramelspacher, a junior who holds the school record in the 100-butterfly, earns her first-career Academic All-MAC award. She maintains a 3.95 GPA as an education major. Gramelspacher also placed sixth at the MAC Championships in the 200-butterfly.
Rounding out the All-MAC honorees was Ingram, who is also a first-time honoree. Ingram, a junior, has a 3.85 GPA and is majoring in art and elementary education. She placed 21st overall in the breaststroke in the 2010 MAC Championships.
To qualify as an Academic All-MAC candidate, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA and participate in 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence, however, are not eligible.
