Last week, Ball State University track and field coach Randy Heisler said he did not imagine his team would fare very well in the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships. He was not too far off the mark.
Ball State was able to score more points in Day Two of the championships, but not enough to put them in the middle of the pack. The Cardinals finished 10th with a score of 25 points.
No Cardinal earned NCAA automatic or provisional numbers in the meet.
Heisler did not return calls requesting comment on the meet.
Senior sprinter Katie Johnson had the highest individual finish for Ball State, placing second in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.50. Johnson was edged by Central Michigan University's Shanaye Carr, who won the event with a time of 8.49. Junior Ra'Jae Marable finished eighth in the event with a time of 8.95. Johnson and Marable combined for nine points in the one event.
Senior distance runner Vanessa Gilbert finished the two-day event with seven total points. Gilbert placed sixth in the 3K run (10:09.44) one day after her fifth-place finish in the 5K run.
Ball State finished seventh in the 4x400 meter relay, earning two points with sophomores Renyae Owsley and Christine Talhelm, senior Jenna Schmitmeyer and freshman Judah Smith.
Kent State won the team meet event with 107 total points. Host Central Michigan finished second with 100 points.
The Cardinals will have one last chance to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships in College Station, Texas when they compete at the Notre Dame Indoor Invitational in Notre Dame, Ind. on Saturday.
