It will be a busy weekend for the Ball State University women's tennis team as it plays host this weekend at the Muncie Northwest YMCA Tennis Center to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee today and Morehead State University on Sunday.
Following an impressive 7-0 victory Wednesday against IUPUI, the team's record improved to 3-1. Coach Amy Behrman said the early season success can be attributed to the girls' preparation and focus.
"They've all been working really hard," Berhman said. "I think this season they all just came together and decided they wanted to be contenders in the Mid-American Conference."
It's a major turnaround for a team that ended last season poorly, finishing 5-13 overall and 0-8 in the MAC. While Behrman wasn't with the team last year, she's quick to point out that health has played a big role in the team's recent resurgence.
"I think last year they just struggled with injuries, especially with Hayley Hall," she said. "This year, she's back and helping us in a big way."
While the team has produced wins this year, Behrman said she is still looking for improvement from her doubles teams, which are currently sitting at .500 with a 6-6 record. After a slow start that put the teams at 3-6, each pair was able to get a win against IUPUI.
The Cardinals could have a great opportunity this weekend to move to 5-1.
For today's match, UW-Milwaukee remains largely untested, having only played once before Friday's match against IUPUI, a 4-3 win against Western Illinois. Ball State won last season's meeting between the two teams by a score of 5-2, and the Panthers also are playing with their first-year head coach Sean McInerney.
Morehead State has a tough opening to its season. The team lost its first three matches prior to Friday's match against the University of Cincinnati. The team will most likely be desperate for a win heading into Sunday when it plays Ball State.
Saturday's contest with UW-Milwaukee starts at 1 p.m. while the match against Morehead State will begin the Sunday at the same time.
