The Ball State University indoor track and field team displayed one of its best performances of the year Friday night, as it came away with 123.5 points, good enough for a second place finish in its own Ball State Quadrangular at the Field Sports Building.
Ball State won three events in the meet, going up against fellow Mid-American Conference members Miami University, Northern Illinois University and Western Michigan University. Western Michigan won the meet for the sixth-straight time, posting 168 points. Miami finished third with 123 points while fourth-place Northern Illinois put up 81.5 points.
With the MAC Indoor Championships just one week away, coach Randy Heisler was satisfied with how well the team is doing.
"We've had a number of season bests. That was the most points we've scored since I've been here," Heisler said. "I hope that we continue and carry that through to next week."
As the most important meet of the season creeps closer, Heisler kept his team's health and stamina in mind.
"You always take that chance when you have that many kids run season bests and lifetime bests the week before your conference meet," Heisler said. "You hope you didn't miss that peak performance by a week."
Junior Thekla Lorenz had an all-around best performance tonight, rewriting personal records in four separate events—all while fighting the flu. Lorenz posted personal bests of 1.65 meters in the high jump, 6.01 meters in the long jump, 11.66 meters in shot put and 9.05 seconds in the 60 meter hurdles.
Sophomore Janae Taylor also put up 15 points, winning the 200-meter dash and finishing third in the 60-meter dash.
With her top performances, Taylor is comfortable knowing where she currently stands.
"I ran my [personal record] for the season, which is really good for me," Taylor said. "The girls that beat me, those are the competition. Those are the girls who are competing for first place, so I'm happy with it."
Next week, the Cardinals will gear up and travel north to Mount Pleasant, Mich., to compete in the MAC Indoor Track and Field Championships. The event begins Friday at 10 a.m.
