Each week, The Ball State Daily News sports staff picks its PPQ — the player, play and quote of the week. And, with the help of our online readers, the weekly fan choice is also featured.
Here's this week's best:
Player: Brittney Emmons, gymnastics
Emmons, a sophomore, had one of the best all-around performances in program history in Friday's loss at Illinois State University tallying three career-highs and tying another. Her career-highs came in the all-around (38.300), beam (9.750) and bars (9.800), while she tied her career-high of 9.875 on the vault. Play: Emily Karwoski, women's swimming and diving
The senior came through big on Senior Day for Ball State, earning two wins in the Cardinals' loss to visiting Miami. In the 29th combined event of the men's and women's meets at the Lewellen Aquatic Center, Karwoski led the Ball State charge in the 200-yard individual medley, winning the event with at a 2:12.58 pace, more than a second ahead of teammate Mary Ehresman.
Quote: "We didn't do as good of a job inside on them, but they're good in there – they're good in there. It was like the Battle of the Bulge. We're pounding it in there, and they're pounding it in there and there's bodies flying. It's just a tough ballgame." — Akron men's basketball coach Keith Dambrot explaining Ball State's play in the post after the Cardinals' 75-70 overtime loss to the Zips on Saturday.
Fan Choice: Randy Davis, men's basketball
With 11 votes and 31 percent of the vote, Davis edged gymnastics' Brittney Emmons, who had eight votes. Davis, a sophomore point guard, continued his rapid improvement last week. He averaged 14.3 points, four rebounds, and 3.7 assists to just 1.7 turnovers per game as the Cardinals' went 2-1 against Ohio University, Bowling Green State University and the University of Akron.
