The Ball State University men's tennis team lost 7-0 to host No. 47 Northwestern University Sunday afternoon to open its 2010 campaign.
The Cardinals opened the match by losing the doubles point, but not without a fight. Sophomores Zane Smith and Andres Monroy were edged 8-6 by the Wildcats' Alex Sanborn and Joshua Graves at No. 2 doubles, while Ball State's No. 1 duo of junior Eduardo Pavia and freshman Dalton Albertin lost 8-5 to Northwestern's Andrew McCarthy and Tobias Reitz.
Ball State remained close with Big Ten power Northwestern in singles play, as three matches went to three sets.
Pavia lost to Graves 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6) at No. 1 singles, while freshman Alexandre Brym lost 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to Eric Spector at No. 3 and Monroy lost to Sanborn for a second time 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 at No. 4 singles.
Ball State returns to action Friday hosting a doubleheader against the University of Dayton at 2 p.m. and Valparaiso University at 6 p.m. at the Muncie Northwest YMCA.
