A Ball State University student made up the story that she was assaulted while walking back to her dorm from the L.A. Pittenger Student Center, Director of Public Safety Gene Burton said.
Karina Villa, 19, originally told police she was grabbed from behind near Woodworth and DeHority complexes on Oct. 15.
Burton said she confessed to lying about the report on Nov. 4 after investigators called her in for a second interview.
"The detectives noticed that there were a couple of inconsistencies between her statement and evidence they were collecting during their investigation," he said.
Burton said he thinks UPD turned the case over to the Delaware County Prosecutor's Office on Tuesday.
