WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cardinals beat IUPUI 3-0, sweep fourth straight match

INDIANAPOLIS - Ball State University made quick work of IUPUI, sweeping them Tuesday.

The Cardinals took quick control of the match, with Charde' Phillips a perfect 5 for 5 on kills in the first game. Julie Breivogel had 4 kills in the first game, including the game-winning kill.

"We just wanted to go out and dominate, and that's what we did," Breivogel said.

In game two, with the match tied 11-11, a Christie Waters diving dig led to an Alisha Green kill that put the Cardinals on top for good. The Cardinals went on to win game two, 25-22.

Game three was highlighted by a 5-0 run that included four straight serves by Brittany McGinnis to give Ball State a 19-13 lead. With the Cardinals leading the game 24-19, the Jaguars went on a 4-0 run to trim the deficit to one, but a four-hit violation gave Ball State the game.

Breivogel ended the game with 13 kills and Kelsey Brandl had a career-high seven blocks. McGinnis collected 42 assists.

Ball State has had a rough time against IUPUI the past two years and they were looking to settle the score this year.

Despite IUPUI's 8-1 record and Ball State's three-game winning streak, some Cardinals wanted to win this match for a different reason.

"I don't think it was their record that made us want to beat them," said Breivogel. "I think it was past experience. This was more a match of revenge and we came out determined to win."

Coach Dave Boos also reiterated the importance of the win.

"This team has been a thorn in our side for years," he said. "Not only did we beat a team we wanted to beat, but we beat a quality team that has beaten quality opponents."

Brandl attributed her blocks to the positioning of her teammates on the outside and the successful use of the scouting report.

"It says a lot of our left and right side blockers setting it up," Brandl said. "It's definitely not all me, because if they weren't there, I wouldn't be getting the blocks."

Boos agreed that the scouting report is a bigger factor this year than it has been in years past.

"Our players this year, because of all of the veterans we have, are able to take the information [from the scouting reports] and apply it to the match," Boos said.

Not only was this the fourth straight win for Ball State, but it also marked their fourth consecutive three-game match. Breivogel said the success could be partially credited to the team chemistry.

"I couldn't be happier with my girls," she said. "I love this team. We all have the same fight, the same will."
