Dill Street DJ drops second mixtape

Ball State University's own DJ Killa Cam will be turning the tables at tailgating this Saturday, helping pump the fans up for the Homecoming game. But that's not the disc jockey's only goal this weekend.

For the last month, Cameron Halberstadt, better known as DJ Killa Cam, has been working on mixing and mastering his latest mix CD, known simply as "Volume 2." The new compilation contains not only samples of today's hit music, but also the best of hip-hop from throughout the past decade. Complete with 12 tracks containing over 50 remixed songs, it's finally ready to be released, Halberstadt said.

"Parts of the mixtape I would kind of compare to something Girl Talk would do," Halberstadt said. "There are a lot of mash-ups where I have one instrumental that I let play for about three minutes, and I'll take seven different a cappella songs and mix it in throughout the three minutes."

Halberstadt said "Volume 2" is more complex than his first mix tape.

"There's a lot of editing, it's not straight mixing like my first mix was," he said. "It's more difficult and a lot more time consuming. You can't just do it and get it done in three hours, it takes weeks."

The new album will be released Saturday during tailgating and will be available again afterwards during Halberstadt's after party at Dill Street Bar and Grill. The party starts at 4 p.m. and will feature Ball State student and rap artist, Derek Albright, also known as Young Breeze.

"Saturday's going to be really crazy, especially with [Halberstadt] DJing and me performing," Albright said. "I'm going to premiere a new song at Dill Street called 'The Ball State Shake Down', which will be on Cam's next mix, 'Volume 3.'"

Initially impressed by Albright's prowess and rap-writing abilities, Halberstadt recently decided to team up with him for both the CD release and his next album. Although Albright isn't included on "Volume 2," most of the tracks on Halberstadt's album-in-progress, "Volume 3," will feature him extensively.

"'Volume 3' is going to be me and Young Breeze, and we're definitely going to be pushing some local artists," Halberstadt said. "A lot of people while I'm DJing will come up and try to give me their mixtape, and probably in the last year I've had around 50 tapes handed to me. There's so much talent out there, and it's hard for everybody to get their chance."

A newcomer to the scene himself, Halberstadt first decided to pick up DJing his freshman year of college after a DJ at a huge weekend house party left a lasting impression on him. Now a senior with three years under his belt, he's best known around Ball state as Dill Street's house DJ.

"He really makes it a fun environment at Dill Street," local fan and Ball State alumna Sona Lee said. "He tries to keep it fresh and fun and tries to get the new songs out there for everyone to listen to. He'll take just about any request you have."

But Halberstadt doesn't limit himself to Muncie. Over the past three years he has DJed from Cancun to New York, and in the meantime has spun for some pretty famous celebs.

"Two summers ago, I DJed at 6 Lounge in Indianapolis, where all the Colts players hang out, and I got to do a bunch of parties for them, including some for Peyton Manning," Halberstadt said. "Also, in May of 2007, I did all the Indy 500 racers' parties, and in about three months working there I made some crazy connections. I've been pretty lucky for just the first three years of me DJing."

Halberstadt hopes that lucky streak will continue as he looks forward to DJing the biggest tailgating party he's ever thrown. There will be no cover at the Dill Street after party, where Young Breeze will perform live after the game.
