Thrilling, extra time, and a monumental rally by Ball State University women's volleyball team are all words to describe the first set against George Washington University. The one important word, win, was missing.
Ball State was swept by George Washington in the second game of the Towson Invitational on Friday in Towson, Md.
George Washington took a commanding 8-1 lead in the first set. Ball State trailed at one point, 20-12 before a furious and monumental rally occurred.
Fighting off six consecuative set points, the Cardinals tied the set at 23 and took the lead at 24-23 on a service error. However, George Washington responded and took a set point of their own. Sophomore Kelsey Brandl came up with a timely block to give Ball State a 28-27 lead, but it wasn't enough. After being knotted up at 29, a service error rocked the Cardinals. Jennifer Boyd came up with a kill to keep Ball State alive, but in the end, attack errors proved costly as Ball State dropped the first set 32-30.
The second set saw both teams trading blows and being in a stalemate halfway through the set. With the score tied at 12, George Washington went on a big run to take command. Despite another rally by Ball State, George Washington took the second set 25-20.
Everything went wrong in the third set for the Cardinals. George Washington jumped out to another big lead and cruised to a 25-13, sweep of the Cardinals.
This was Ball State's second loss of the day. In the morning, Ball State lost to the University of Pennsylvania in four sets.
Ball State returns to action at 10 a.m. Saturday against tournament host Towson University. More coverage to come later this evening.
