WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Ball State dominates host team at Towson Invitational

Less than 24 hours after playing two hard-fought matches and coming up on short, the Ball State University women's volleyball team fared better in its match Saturday.

Looking to avoid a sweep of the entire weekend, Ball State took it to the host of the Towson Invitation, Towson University early and often Saturday. A 25-17 first set win was followed by a 25-11 second set win and then the Cardinals closed out the match with a seven-point win the third set.

A much tighter affair was in order in the third set as Towson recovered from an early deficit to gain a slim lead midway through. The Cardinals put together a run capped by an Alisha Green kill to give Ball State a 16-13 advantage.

After forcing Towson to take both timeouts the Cardinals clinched the three set sweep with a 25-18 win.

The win improves Ball State's non-conference record to 7-6 with Mid-American Conference action starting next weekend at Worthen Arena.

Charde' Phillips and Green led the way offensively for Ball State with 12 and 13 kills. Sophomore Kelsey Brandl added 10 kills of her own while Brittany McGinnis tallied a kill and 35 assists in the Cardinals' final match of the tournament.

Kaylee Schembra and Julie Breivogel finished tied for the lead defensively, each notching 12 digs.

The Cardinals out-killed the Tigers 43-19 in kills and 14-4 in service aces. Ball State registered a .255 hitting percentage while holding Townson to a .091 clip.
