Student loses finger after shooting accident

Ball State University student Thorne Martin was released from Ball Memorial Hospital at 5 p.m. Tuesday, a week after accidentally shooting himself while cleaning his firearm.

Martin, who had his pinky finger amputated as a result of the accident, said he is planning on attending classes Wednesday.

Martin said he was in his apartment cleaning his gun last Tuesday when he accidently pulled the trigger.

"I called 911 and laid on the ground, waiting for the ambulance to take me to the hospital," he said.

Martin said the bullet severed his femoral artery as well as smaller veins and arteries in his leg.

Martin said he bought his gun in July, but that he has been around guns since he was five.

Follow-up performance tests and blood tests are the next step in Martin's recovery, and will start next week.
