SOCCER: Cards drop third straight match of season

The Ball State University soccer team dropped their third straight game of the season, 3-2, against Valparaiso University on Thursday night. The Cardinals played their first game of the Boilermaker Challenge Cup in West Lafayette against the Crusaders.

Valparaiso scored the frist goal in the 19th minute of the game, beating freshman goalkeeper Nicole Wood. The score would remain 1-0 until the 49th minute of the second half when sophomore Christine Concannon put in a goal from six yards out on a pass from junior Jacki Eft. Ball State then took a 2-1 lead four minutes later when Eft recorded her second assist of the match with a cross to senior Megan Ridley, who put the ball into the corner of the goal.

Valparaiso rallied and in the 70th minute scored the equalizer on a clear out from a Ball State corner kick. The Crusaders took the lead for good seven minutes later. The Cardinals had an opportunity to even the score in the 89th minute when junior Kirstina Anderson sent a ball that was headed by freshman Brigit Reder, only to have the Valparaiso goalkeeper save the goal.

The Crusaders had an advantage over Ball State in shots 19-11 with 12 of their shots coming in the second half. Wood, making her first career start for the Cardinals, recorded seven saves in the loss.
