The recession has hit Indiana pretty hard as most of you have noticed.
Muncie is no exception. The BorgWarner plant closed in the spring and the unemployment rate has hovered around 10 percent. Even the Daily News has had to cut back on the number of print editions we publish each week.
CNN reported in February that charitable donations were down a few percentage points; however, volunteerism had increased.
Through all this, we as a community continue to give our time, work and money to people and charities that need help.
Theta Chi fraternity and Sigma Kappa sorority held the 20th annual Water Daze this weekend. The event raised $3,000 for Riley Hospital for Children, $500 more than last year.
The greek community raised more than $72,000 for various charities in 2008 and put in more than 9,000 hours of service work. In the Spring Semester this year, it raised more than $17,500 and put in 7,418 hours.
Student Voluntary Services and the United Way of Delaware County organized five service projects Sept. 11 as part of the National Day of Service.

Scotty's Brewhouse is participating in the annual Share Our Strength Great American Dine Out this week to raise money to feed hungry children. The event will help feed about 12 million children.
Doc's Music Hall had a benefit concert for a 14-month-old girl with leukemia Saturday night.
The amount of money raised may or may not be less than what groups were bringing in before the recession, but they are still working and they are still helping people. When the whole country faces a problem, working together and doing positive things is still important - maybe more so than during the good times.
It's encouraging that people and organizations around Delaware County find space in their schedules and wallets for charity. While publications across the country report decreases in charitable giving, it won't stop completely. We have too many good people in our community and those who continue to give deserve recognition and should be commended.
So kudos.
