Online voting begins for 2009 Homecoming king, queen

Top 10 candidates to be revealed at Sept. 16 Royalty Fashion Show

Online voting for Ball State University's 2009 Homecoming royalty starts today and ends Sept. 15.

Students can log on to www.bsu.edu/votebsu using their Ball State usernames and passwords to cast their votes.

Senior Jada Buchanan, Homecoming Steering Committee awards and judges chairwoman, said all Ball State students can check out who the student and faculty/staff Homecoming candidates are on the Alumni Association's Web site. Candidates' names are listed with their pictures and are divided into four categories: student king, student queen, faculty/staff king and faculty/staff queen.

"You might see somebody that you didn't know was a candidate," Buchanan said.

And, everyone should vote, she said.

"Winning Homecoming queen, for staff and for students, is a really big honor," Buchanan said. "A lot of people will know about this alumni-wise. It's such an honor to be nominated, and especially to win... I know it means a lot to the candidates."

There are about 36 student king candidates and 40 student queen candidates from many different campus organizations, she said. The top 10 student king and queen candidates will be announced at the Royalty Fashion Show on Sept. 16th, and the winner will be revealed at Air Jam on Oct. 1.

"It's a huge title," Buchanan said. "They're going to be able to be escorted in the parade. They're announced at everything."

The faculty/staff winners are announced at the Opening Day Bonfire on Sept. 28 at LaFollette Field.

Students can vote for 3 candidates from both the student king and the student queen lists. A link to the voting page will be distributed by e-mail to students today.

"It's so easy, all you have to do is get online and vote," Buchanan said. "It takes literally a minute. Every vote counts; it comes down to every single vote."

Senior Carrie Cozad, Homecoming Steering Committee royalty chairwoman, said all the votes are calculated by a computer program. After the computer calculates the top 10 candidates, Cozad said they will be interviewed by alumni and faculty about the candidates' classes and what they would do as student king or queen. Then they are given a score based on the interviews, and that score is added to how many votes they received to determine the winners, she said.
